Understanding US tariffs on Chinese goods

What is a tariff?

A tariff is a tax charged on imported goods when they enter the United States. For products imported from China, the most common charges are a base customs duty (set by the product’s classification) and one or more additional tariffs applied in specific trade situations. This calculator adds them all up so you can see the total tariff burden on your shipment’s value.

How tariffs are calculated

Each tariff is a percentage of the goods’ customs value:

  • Customs duty = customs value × duty rate
  • Additional tariff = customs value × additional tariff rate
  • Other surcharge = customs value × surcharge rate
  • Total tariff = the sum of the above

The customs value is usually the transaction value — what you actually paid the supplier for the goods. Freight and insurance are generally not part of the duty basis, though rules vary by case.

Where to find the rate for your product

Duty rates are tied to the product’s HS (Harmonized System) code. The authoritative US sources are the U.S. International Trade Commission (USITC) Harmonized Tariff Schedule and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Because rates differ widely by product, this calculator asks you to enter the rate that applies to your specific item rather than assuming one. We do not present any rate as current or authoritative.

Tariff vs the full landed cost

Tariffs are only one part of importing. The full landed cost also includes product cost, freight, insurance, brokerage and port fees. If you want the complete picture — including per-unit landed cost — use our China → US Import Cost Calculator.

Frequently asked questions

Does this calculator use live tariff rates?
No live feed. The base customs duty can be prefilled from a bundled HTS snapshot that the site owner updates periodically (look for the “valid as of” date in the lookup box). Additional tariffs stay as your own estimates. Always confirm with the official USITC schedule or your customs broker before relying on a number.
Is the effective rate the same as the duty rate?
Not necessarily. The effective rate is the total of all tariffs divided by the customs value, so it reflects duty plus any additional tariffs and surcharges combined.
Is my data sent anywhere?
No. All calculations run in your browser. Nothing is uploaded or stored on a server.
